Akron
Most of the businesses in Akron are on Reed Street, which
runs east from Iowa Highway 12. These include a couple of
restaurants and Thorson Drug, an institution in the community
for many years.
Akron is celebrating its 125th birthday in 2007. The founders of
the community chose a location along the Big Sioux River and
a railroad. The Dakota & Iowa Railroad now uses these tracks.
The old Milwaukee Road depot is still standing.
The town had 1,489 residents as of the 2000 Census. It is
home to Akron-Westfield High School. In addition to serving
these two communities, the school district also has 61
students from South Dakota.
