Hamburg

Hamburg bills itself as the “Cornerstone of Iowa.” At the time of the 2000
census, 1,240 people called the Fremont County community home.
In addition to Stoner Drug, downtown businesses include the Harvest
Restaurant & Lounge, The Rainbow (imported Korean furniture and gifts), and
the historic Colonial Theater, built in 1921. It is one of the oldest operating
theaters in the country.
A couple blocks north of the theater on Main Street is the Hamburg Public
Library, built in 1917 with money provided by the Carnegie Foundation.
Hamburg has something most other similar-sized towns do not -- a modern
hospital. Grape Community Hospital was built in 1964 and has kept pace with
technological innovations in the health care field.
Hamburg was founded in 1858 by Augustus Borcher, a native of Hamburg,
Germany.
Fremont County Highway L-44 offers motorists a lovely drive from Hamburg
north, along the base of the Loess Hills. The Mincer Orchard operates along the
highway, offering a variety of fruit in season.
