Macy
Macy had a population of 956 at the time of the 2000 Census. The Omaha Tribe
of Nebraska has its headquarters in Macy, the principal community of the
Omaha Indian Reservation. The reservation encompasses 31,000 acres and
has a population of 5,227.
The Omaha Indians once lived much farther east, perhaps even along the
Atlantic Ocean. They slowly migrated west over several hundred years until they
reached the Missouri River valley, where Lewis and Clark encountered them in
1804. In 1854, the Omaha signed a treaty with the U.S. Government, selling all
of their lands except the present reservation.
