Pisgah
C.W. McCall is primarily remembered for his '70s hit, "Convoy," but his
ode to the “The Old Home Fill’er-up an’ Keep On-a-Truckin’ Café” actually
started his recording career. The song had its origins in an ad campaign
that Billy Dale Fries created for Old Home Bread. Fries did the voice for a
character in the ads, a truck driver named C.W. McCall. The ads were so
popular that Fries was given a contract to record an album by C.W.
McCall, and the rest is history.
The Bertha Hester Memorial
building was the home of Orson
Babe's barber shop for many years.
Speaking of history, Pisgah has
its share of old buildings that
were important in the town's
early days, including the Bertha
Hester Memorial building at the
corner of Main and Front
streets. It started life as the
town’s bank in 1900. It served
as a real estate office from
1914-1944, then for the next 40
years was the barber shop of
Orson Babe, “Pisgah's Mr.
Baseball.” Now it's a museum
filled with items related to its
former uses. The building does
not have set hours that it is
open, check the front door for
information on how to obtain a
tour or stop by the Loess Hills
State Forest Visitors Center at
217 Front Street.
Across the street from the
Hester building is another old
frame structure that once was
the Pisgah Hotel. Unfortunately,
it has fallen into disrepair.
The previously mentioned Loess Hills State Forest Visitors Center
contains a display of Loess Hills art and a diorama of the hills. It is open
8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and 1-4 p.m. Saturday and
Sunday.
