A view of South Sioux City from the War Eagle Monument in Sioux City. There
are actually three states visible in this photo. The strip of land between the Big
Sioux River (foreground) and Missouri River is the southeastern tip of South
Dakota.

South Sioux City

South Sioux City lies directly across the Missouri River from Sioux City. The two
cities are connected by Veterans Memorial Bridge (U.S. Highway 77), linking
Dakota Avenue in South Sioux City with Wesley Way in Sioux City. Highway 77
ends at Interstate 29 in Sioux City.
The paved Al Bengtson Trail for hiking and biking begins at the bridge and
winds 6.6 miles through South Sioux City. Along the way it passes Scenic Park
along the Missouri River. The park offers 85 camping sites, a boat ramp,
outdoor pool, and tennis courts. The park (accessible by car at the intersection
of 4th and E streets) is also home to the Riverview Complex and Dible Soccer
Complex. The Riverview Complex includes five baseball/softball fields and
frequently has played host to the Nebraska state baseball and softball
tournaments. The Dible Soccer Complex boasts 17 full-size fields.
The Bengtson Trail follows the river as it turns south. The trail then heads west,
back into South Sioux City, passing the community's indoor pool (420 E. 33rd
St.) before ending at Crystal Cove Park, which runs along the east side of
Highway 77 at its junction with Interstate 129. There's an additional 1.5 miles of
trails in the 60-acre park, which features a lake stocked three times a year for
fishing.
Just to the northeast of Crystal Cove Park is the South Ridge Golf Club, home of
a climate-controlled indoor driving range and a nine-hole outdoor course. The
dome's 44,000 square feet of space can also be used for football, soccer,
baseball, and softball.
South of Crystal Cove Park, just east of Highway 77, is Atokad Park. There's live
thoroughbred horse racing here each September (2007 dates: Sept. 14-16) and
simulcast racing year-round.
South Sioux City has a large Hispanic population (25% of the population at the
time of the 2000 Census) and is home to a number of Hispanic businesses.
