Westfield
The Broken Kettle Grasslands are a few miles southeast of
Westfield on the Butcher Road Connection of the Loess Hills
National Scenic Byway. The Butcher Road Connection links
Iowa Highway 12 with the Ridge Road Loop of the byway
(Plymouth County highways C-43 and K-18).
The grasslands encompass 3,000 acres in the hills and are
home to a variety of flora and fauna, including the prairie
rattlesnake. The prairie rattler is common in South Dakota, but
is considered endangered in Iowa. It is therefore illegal to kill
or collect a prairie rattlesnake in the state. Badgers and
coyotes also have been seen in the grasslands.
One of the few commercial enterprises in
Westfield is this small grocery store.
