Fremont-Mills students help refurbish memorial

In 2006-2007, Fremont-Mills High School students made new name panels for
the Veterans Memorial in Thurman. Misspellings mentioned in the book were
corrected at that time. The memorial also now includes information about its
history.

Additions made to Flight 232 Memorial

The Sioux City Journal reports that a plaque has been added to the Spirit of
Siouxland Memorial in Chris Larsen Park, providing more information about a
sculpture based on a famous photograph taken during the extraordinary rescue
efforts that took place during the crash of United Airlines Flight 232 at the Sioux
City airport on July 19, 1989. The sculpture shows Iowa Air National Guard
Lieutenant Colonel Dennis Nielsen carrying three-year-old Spencer Bailey to
safety.
The book suggests that the entire memorial may be "a little too
self-congratulatory with respect to Sioux City's response to the tragedy, rather
than focusing at least some attention to the memory of those who were not
fortunate enough to be saved." The Journal article notes that some community
members have expressed the view that "people should stop patting themselves
on the back about the 232 incident." The article suggests that part of the
purpose of the plaque was to honor the victims of the crash.
